Once inhabited by Native Americans, including the Chickasaw Indians, Millington was initially a center for agriculture. After its establishment in 1878, Millington was believed to be named for the Millington Lumber Company, which operated in the area. The arrival of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad in the late 19th century played a significant role in the growth of Millington, which brought increased economic opportunities and helped the town thrive.
In 1942, during World War II, the U.S. Navy established a training base in Millington, known as the Naval Air Station Memphis. Over the years, the base evolved and was eventually renamed Naval Support Activity Mid-South. It became a major center for training and logistics for the U.S. Navy, contributing significantly to the local economy.
Upon entering the 20th century and beyond, the city expanded its infrastructure, and the presence of the naval base continued to be a driving force in the local economy, thus expanding with commercial and industrial development.
Millington continues to be a community with a mix of residential, commercial, and industrial areas, and its history is closely tied to both its agricultural roots and its role as a hub for naval activities. The presence of Naval Support Activity Mid-South remains a significant factor in the city’s identity and economy.
