Lakeland, Tennessee, is a suburb located in Shelby County, northeast of Memphis. Lakeland’s history, like many areas in the region, traces back to early European settlement and the westward expansion in the 19th century. The land that would become Lakeland was originally part of a large plantation owned by the Walker family. When the city of Lakeland became incorporated in 1977, it was only 1 of 7 unincorporated municipalities in Shelby County to be founded from an amusement park which was adjacent to Garner Lake and what is now 1-40 interstate. As the years went on and the amusement park closed, it made way for more residential and industrial mixed use developments. Although a relatively young city, Lakeland continues to be a top destination for individuals and family homeowners for its vicinity to Memphis, good school district, and continuous growth.
